Top 10 tips to ensure a successful Cake Smash Photo Session.

A sprinkle of fun, a dollop of cake, and memories that last forever

I absolutely Love a Cake Smash photo session. It is a huge milestone for that tiny little one you brought home just a few months ago. These session can be super fun and relaxed if we do our planning right. All Cake Smash Sessions are done in my studio in Middelburg Kanonkop.

Before your Cake Smash

A week before your session. Give your baby a cupcake or a bowl of frosting. Let them play and get messy.

The frosting between their little fingers is a very new sensory experience and can very well be very overwhelming. Alot of our littles need some time to adjust and get used to this feeling. When they get to play and get messy before there is a camera they tend to be more inclined to play with the cake in studio.

LET YOUR LITTLE ONE EAT SNacks or a meal on the floor for a week leading up to your cake smash session.

When they eat in a high chair most of the time, they might not feel comfortable if we put them on the floor in front of a cake. By doing this everyday for a week leading up to their session it shows them that they are safe and allowed to eat on the floor. Which in turn makes their session so much more relaxed.

Bring your cake to room temperature.

Make sure the cake isn't freezing cold when you bring it to studio. Then little one won't like it. Remember to pack finger foods like puffs or little yogurt drops. Make sure that the people that are making your cake know it is for a cake smash so that there are no sharp support stick in the cake.

Try their outfit on ahead of time.

It is very important to make sure it fits well. Make sure that they can sit ,crawl and stand comfortably in their chosen outfit.

Ps. The studio outfits are very comfortable and will be able to check on the day of shoot. I do not have all theme colors so please check ahead of time.

During your Cake Smash

Show your little one that they can enjoy the icing.

When you see that they are hesitant dip your finger in the icing and give them a taste. They trust you and will be more willing to enjoy the cake knowing mom or dad like it too.

Be patient

Some babies take a bit more time to get comfortable , please do not stress. We will take our time and give them a few breaks. I will never force a baby to eat cake if they do not want. We will try our best to get those shots in.

Be prepared to get messy!

If your baby loves to crawl or walk away fast , be prepared to quickly put them back in their spot. I will capture those happy giggles when they crawl and play again. This tends to be very messy for mom but gives amazing photo's.

Don't panic when they cry

A lot of the times our little ones cry. I promise to do my best to get them comfortable and happy again. If it turns out we can't , please don't stress these are still precious memories to look back one day and show them .

Savor this experience

You have waited almost a year for this amazing milestone. Enjoy it! Take in every moment. Every smile , every little bite just be in the Moment.

Last few reminders

  1. To edit your gallery takes about two weeks to do.  Please make sure to book your little one's shoot before their birthday if you wish to have the photo's on his birthday.
  2. I always make sure we have an hour in half in studio for little one's session. But I find that they get overstimulated fast in this new environment and food so they usually give us 45 minutes before they are very over it. I try my best for us to not reach overstimulation phase.
  3. Make sure to pack a towel , diapers, snacks , sippy cup or bottle , wipes and clean clothes to travel home in.
